Hurricane Safety Tips
Here are some tips for staying safe during a hurricane:
-
Before the storm
- Secure your property: Trim trees and shrubs, reinforce garage doors, and cover windows with storm shutters or plywood. You can also bring inside outdoor furniture, decorations, and trash cans, and anchor items like gas grills and propane tanks.
- Prepare for flooding: Clean out gutters and downspouts, and stockpile sandbags and plastic sheeting. You can also consider installing a sump pump with a battery backup, and elevating your water heater, heating system, and electric panel.
- Plan an evacuation: Learn evacuation routes and plan to move 20–50 miles inland to higher ground or an emergency shelter.
-
During the storm
- Stay inside: If you must leave, follow instructions from local officials. If you can't evacuate, take shelter in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level, away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.
- Be prepared for flooding: If you're trapped by flooding, move to the highest level of the building. Don't walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. If your car is trapped, stay inside and seek refuge on the roof if water rises.
- Stay informed: Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or other radio or TV stations for storm news and alerts. Be ready to turn off main energy sources like power, water, and gas.
